12:04 am - Gaycafe.com and npj.com down
What's strange, is that I can telnet to them ... and even ping them or do a traderoute to them from my concentric.net account, but when I try to use my web browser to get to them, or even to apollo or apollo2 it times out and doesn't respond.
I don't know what the problem is ... sounds like a DNS issue? I did telnet to gaycafe.com and ended up on hermes .. so I wonder if removing that Linux box caused some problems that we weren't anticipating?

Both of them have been cropped down slightly from our "A" size of 512x783 to remove the "black edge" as well as the www.gaycafe.com tag from the top of the photo.
In their "editing" they've lost some of the clarity and color depth, but they are definately from The Villa. I'd recognize that quality of JPEG anywhere.
Also, on this page, the file "bb9.htm" is one of David's Models that appeared in print -- you will notice a significant difference between this image and the ones that were taken from The Villa as far as quality is concerned. The ones from the Villa are still far superior ... The file "bb10.htm" is Richard Channing, yet another Villa rip-off. So is "bb7.htm" although I don't know the model's name off the top of my head. Going on, "bb11.htm" is R. Barett from The Villa. There are 10 photos on this page. Five have been taken from The Villa, and two are from print. The other three are existing scans from print done by other people. One of the two scans from print is David's model.
It's nice to know that John, who so strongly supports the proper "credits" given to images has taken the stance of "you didn't hear it from me," when it comes to material that you own or that we supply in The Villa. There is a *WORLD* of difference between a Villa photo and any other scanned photo. Ours stand out no matter what.
As you know, there is always an excuse when you need one, so I'll use this event as an excuse for saying that John Cox is a spinless slime ball. Were I him, I would have already let the guy that's running this page as well as little Billy Rivers know where he got 50% of his content from. Not that he or any of the rest of them give a shit, they're just out to make money ... =) Must be nice to know that the way you do that is to leech off of the efforts of others. No wonder they're so amazingly profitable. Additionally, neither The Gay Cafe or Hadrian's Villa apear on this person's link pages.
The hard drive on my desktop machine died two days ago while I was trying to send that file to Daniel. I've found another copy of it and put it on my laptop. He should have it by now.

And another thing, The main page of this Gallery says (The last line is the kicker!):
"Hello all! We are proud and so very excited to be a part of Badpuppy. I would like to thank Bill, Ben and Joshua and the whole staff of Badpuppy for all their help and consideration.
"A very Special "Thank you" to George at Badpuppy Contributor "Gallery George" for all his patience, advise and help.
"Again, to all our dedicated followers a big "Thank you" for all your kind words and hopes of JohnJohn's Room coming back up. We hope to live up to and surpass your expectations.

8:47 am - Update from Nathan
Morning Martin,
I hope that this note finds you well in Leavenworth! :)
Anyway, an update on Shawn. He sex me his school Photo ID, and then explained that it was him who had the problems, and not someone else. His name is Shawn Christian Kimble ... so it makes some sense. He's pissed at me right now because I pushed and prodded to get the answers I wanted, and he wasn't ready to give them to me -- so for the moment I'm a bad guy who has hurt his feelings. :(
Umm, I have an issue of major annoyance. It's called badpuppy.com -- while I respect ability and competition, I'm continuing to discover that they way Bill Rivers and his crew gets ahead is to extort the efforts of others, re-work them some, and claim ownership of the result. Today, I received a message inviting me to check out a new gallery of theirs, http://badpuppy.com/jonpuppy/ or "JohnJohn's Room" ... well, on the main page, they state: "All pix featured in Museum of Men are collected from various sites around the Net. Any info, logos and/or names on the pix remain to give credit where credit is due."
Fine. Sounds good enough. I checked out the gallery. There were ten images. Five of them (bb5, bb6, bb7, bb10, bb11) are taken directly from my site, Hadrian's Villa, the header logo and model identification text has been cropped off, and the image resized by about 20 pixels all around to remove a natural "black edge" that results from scanning the original slide onto PhotoCD. There is no mention of The Gay Cafe or of Hadrian's Villa on their link page, and they proudly declare that joining badpuppy gives one "access to literaly thousands of great images for one low price and a whole lot more!"
Whole lot more eh? Well, their thousands of great images are mostly stolen from around the net -- but what's crafty about it is that badpuppy makes it a point to showcase individuals who make it their hobby to go around and extort these photos, and badpuppy just provides some place to distribute their wares to badpuppy's membership list. Additionally, the bulk of images that they offer their subscribers are simply "taken and cleaned daily" from the UseNet binary groups. There is no accountability or integrity here, and people are being led to believe that there is. Anyway, on to "a whole lot more!"
They've just started something called "Gay Today" which appears to offer tidbits of news and related events from across the globe. I haven't discovered the source of where they're getting this information, and I don't really give a good god damn .. it just makes me sick to my stomach. Bill Rivers says this about Gay Today in his "Update" letter: "GayToday is News, Information, Technology, Current Events just like you would get from anywhere else. Just one thing, it is Free to anyone wishing to utilize this resource. During the week, GayToday is updated hourly, or as News and Information are made available." Humm, "just like you would get from anywhere else," and "made available" eh? I wonder just where and when that is.
Oh, their rate plan is neat also. Automatic renewal for all plans. This means that they charge you and will keep charging you until you tell them to stop. How convenient. I'd give you a rate comparison, but theirs are twice as much as mine (but if you spend $100 you get a Badpuppy CD! Which I have seen, and it's nothing more than a collection of passed around photos from UseNet.)
What do I do to stand out? Or are people not interested in honesty anymore? Humm, anyway, since I don't have the interest to operate my own gay news service, as well as the other things that badpuppy exploits from around the net, I think my solution should be to identify and sponsor those sites that are doing a good job .. and keep them in existence.
I have server capacity and network resources out my ears. I've been inviting sites that I like to let me host their pages in exchange for mentioning The Gay Cafe as their sponsor for network connectivity. I haven't received any replies. You mentioned that you may be moving to Denver soon. I was, and continue to be, impressed by gayplace.com as well as the work that you do with Web Creations. If having me host your internet pages and other services would help reduce costs, please let me know. What annoys me the most about the Internet is the severe lack of cooperation between people who are all trying to do the same thing -- and that is provide the one stop spot for gay people to spend their time. While badpuppy is giving the impression of providing this right now, I wonder how much longer they can keep it up before having to actually start creating things on their own ... I imagine that based on what they charge subscribers, that they have enough cash flow to afford lots of overhead costs (i.e. employees) ... well, I'll just be quite. I just feel alone, and I don't like it, especially when I know that there are people out there who would benefit from what I have to offer. Everyone that I want to do business with on the 'net just seems to ignore me ... and I don't understand why -- I don't have a problem when I fly to some city, in the US or in Europe, and introuce myself personally to demonstrate my ability and ideas. I don't want the "Bill Rivers" of the world to win, and I'm tired of trying to do it all on my own.

9:12 am - ICVerify also not working

11:00 am - Image Labeling
Hi Ann,
I've been playing around with several ways of putting the Cafe URL on to the photos, and I would like to suggest this as the result:
The program "dbslurp" has all the toold to open a file, and manipulate it. What I would like to have it do, is take the last 5 to 7 pixels of an image, and just start putting the text www.gaycafe.com www.gaycafe.com www.gaycafe.com along the bottom until it runs out of room. A small font size will be required - something similar to Arial would look okay I think. If 5 to 7 pixels in height isn't realistic, then decide what is. The color of the text should be the same color of green that is currently used to put the ruling line across the top of Villa images. That should show up pretty well.
I've been surfing the web this morning, and I'm convinced that the answer to making the site popular is to flood guests with new photos at an affordable price -- updating them often, and seeing to it that our URL is on every one. I've been asked not to drop the price to $.10 a piece, but I know that they need to be cheap.
We already have a system for storing and delivering the photos from Hadrian's Villa -- but it is a little too complex in that there are several fields to the database. If we don't concern outselves with the image height and width sizes (let the browser figure it out) then we can focus on filling that database with pics (as the thumbnails are something that we can keep a constant size for HTML purposes, and the larger sized images will just be passed as JPEG instead of a JPEG in HTML.) and set some scripts to grab content from that group of photos and archive pages of it every six hours. The script should be flexible in a few ways -- it should be able to select images based on the royalty field (like we can have it pick all images by photographer) as well as choose images that are in the same range (say, images 2134001-2134050 if that makes sense). This way we can control how the script pulls up images for disply ... I still need to decide just what goes where, as there will be some pages that are just "created" then archived, while others will be static and just refresh continually, but pulling photos from a selected group.
I apologize for not being clear ... I know that I need to set more solid expectations, and then follow through with them without changing horses in mid-stream.

I viewed the current batch from a web browser, and it showed up okay ... perhaps that is because it doesn't actually communicate with ICVerify, but just displays a file that is on the server in the icverdat directory that ICVerify shares access to.
Also, I wonder if perhaps we didn't accidently unplug the phone cord as we were moving the machines around to take the Linux box out?
When I try to view the last settled batch using:
- clip -
It comes back with an empty document. This leads me to believe that the file is either missing, or that ICVerify really isn't in communication with the web server.
The eleven o'clock time frame yesterday makes me think that removing the Linux box has caused some problems. I've had many users complaining that they're not able to get to the site, and that their registrations are failing ... Perhaps there was some DNS issue with the Linux box which we overlooked, or removing it caused a redirection "hole" somewhere.
I can meet someone at the computer room anytime today to see what the matter is.

12:17 pm - Error E-mails for Registrations
I noticed that I haven't been receiving my e-mail for these failed registrations in the past 24-hours like I usually would in a circumstance like this. The only ones that I'm receiving are the "TOKEN" errors. As the Linux box was doing some e-mail functions for gaycafe.com and npj.com I wonder if there were scripts that still pointed to it to send mail?
I think I may know why, also. When Jawaid was writing may of those scripts, we were sending mail through the i-cafe.com domain, and I notice that this domain still points to the Linux box at IP *.*.15.150 -- which would explain, perhaps, why the e-mail isn't going through on the failed registrations. There may be a lot of other things that reference to the i-cafe.com domain that were overlooked. Updating the i-cafe.com domain IP address to point to the same directory path as gaycafe.com on apollo may solve that problem.
This wouldn't explain why ICVerify is acting up. So there is something strange happening there -- perhaps removing the Linux box caused the "link" to the ICVerify box to die ... or perhaps the ICVerify box's DNS was being provided through the Linux box ... I don't know, but I'm going to blame it on the absence of something that the Linux box was doing.
I'm confused about exactly what was happening yesterday evening with DNS. The gaycafe.com domain was resolving to hermes.csd.net for a while, and I couldn't log in via telnet to hermes (I'm assuming that my accounts there have been removed) ... but I also couldn't use an IP or variations of apollo or hermes to get anything through the web browser either.
Whatever the problem is, it is one that is keeping people from spending any money at the moment. I can bring the Linux box back to the computer room and we can plug it in again until we determine what is causing this problem.
Someone please let me know when, or if, this is okay to do. I'm at home. The cell phone is here -- e-mail is better.

I never ran the "dbslurp" myself -- Jawaid and Lisa always did that because of the level of pampering it required, and the CD that it was reading data from had to be mounted in the Linux box in order for it to work. I know little about it, other than it exists, and some of its capabilities. It was a utility that Jawaid picked up somewhere on the 'net and just added to his library.

While I was in the shower (amazing ideas always seem to occur in the bathroom) I decided that the easiest method would be to have me produce the large sized photos, and the corresponding thumbnails on my laptop, then FTP them into special "receiving" directoried on gaycafe.com -- there would be a directory for each of the royalty people (like T, D, K) and within each of them, broken into sub-directories for orientation (portrait, landscape, or square). From here, a script could read the seven character image numbers, and add the images to it's database and transfer them to the appropriate directory location under //newgal/images based on which directory the files are in on the incoming gaycafe.com directory -- meaning that if the first four characters of the seven character file name isn't already a sub-directory in newgal/images, then it will create it and move the files there. This way all the files are being kept in the same place, and the scripts can get to them using the existng structure. The other fields of the photos in the database will be left blank for the moment.

I looked at this script, and noticed that I can't get to any of the FoersterMedia magazines. It keeps giving a Server Error on the magazines that I already own ... anyway, the script for bulk coins is wonderful, and I also like that if you already own the page, it skips the purchase page altogether and just takes you to the Gallery. This eliminates the problem with how to present the Magazines and "capture" people who don't have access to them. Just provide a directory of available magazines, and code it as though they have to buy them, and if they already own them, they'll just pass right through, otherwise it'll ask them to pay for it. Wonderful. Also, I think that it may be better to put all the cc information forms on the same page ... so they just have to fill it out and click, rather than choose another plan and click again. We could put little check boxes next to the coins or something like that ... I'll think on it, but I like it. :) I also like that if you pass the group=xxxx along with the purchase, it will keep track of where it is that they're trying to buy access to ... does it automatically take their coins out of the new purchase to pay for that magazine, or do they have to go through spending their coins on that magazine over again now that they have them to spend?

Ann,
I tried all the URL's in the FoersterMedia section, including my fmgg0 section where I was playing with that auto-update of thumbnails script.
None of them will load. I tested the Personals, and they pulled up okay, so I don't think it is anything to do with CGI scripts in particular, just these ... anything in the error logs on it?

Yes, 120x180 is the correct size. :) As to the Zip Discs, please send them back from whence they came. :) If you need the address, let me know, but it should be on the letter that he provided or on the FedEx paper. Thank you for that ... I'd say to bill it to my FedEx number, but it takes the charges from my bank account, and at the moment it's below zero.
Got a new merchant account set-up, so I'm just waiting for all the whizzbang codes to show up on Monday so that I can re-program. Looks like everything will become "Villa Adriana" for billing purposes after the 25th.
Thank you for the time in New Orleans. :) I'm looking at going to Germany in the last week of March or the first week of April -- as I forgot when you said that you wanted to go, perhaps you could see if this works into your schedule. The plane ticket is about $450 at the moment, and T was going to pick up my tab if I decided to go there and to the east coast in mid-March. Hopefully, *(PRAY)* I will have cash flow by then.

I thought that npj.com e-mail was already being handled properly on apollo. Besides, this isn't ALL e-mail, just a particular set of scripts that have some old information in them.
Whatever it is, there are scripts "tied" to the IP or the domain i-cafe.com -- the reason I say this is that Aaron just updated the DNS pointers for this domain, and e-mail started to show up moments later. npj.com e-mail is fine, it's just something that isn't using npj.com for e-mail that's the problem. I looked at the e-mail headers, and couldn't determine anything useful about where the mail originated from. The script that generates this e-mail message is in cc.cgi in the /wwwdocs/reg/ directory -- here's an excerpt:
$cgivars{'answer'} = $answer;
# open (ML,"| smail $admin");
open (ML,"| $SENDMAIL -t");
print ML "From: nathan\@npj.com\n";
print ML "Subject: ERROR IN CREDIT CARD PROCESSING SYSTEM $cgivars{'CustID'}\n";
print ML "To: $admin\n\n";
preprocess_cgi_text("syserror.tmp",ML);
close ML;
I don't know how that could have anything to do with i-cafe.com ... *shrug*

1:27 pm - The "X" error code
The program error codes in the ICVerify manual are listed by numbers and not text characters. To find out exactly what the problem is, someone will have to attempt a sale at the ICVerify console ... if Aaron has a copy of Timbuktu, then this can be done remotely, otherwise we'll have to go plug a monitor into the beast and see what its problem is. When we know what error number it is returning, then that'll give an indication of why it isn't working. Perhaps it just needs to be restarted since it was unplugged from the network, and it may have never re-connected when the cable was replaced. This sounds like the most obvious solution. (As the joke goes, "What if we just get out of the car and get back in again?")
The only "X" return field is for address verification (which is turned off) and means that the address and nine-digit zip code both match records on the processor side of the transaction -- it's for verification purposes, so I don't think this is the "X" that we're after.

Anything with an "i-cafe.com" needs to be changed to "npj.com" -- :) I think it's working a-okay now though. :) Thanks.

3:36 pm - HRC
Afternoon Andy and Tim,
I've been poking around the 'net again today, and have been spending some time at the Human Rights Campaign web site. (Actually, it started out as a search at Amazon Books for one of Andy's titles to tell a friend the ISBN number and encourage him to purchase a copy, and then I found an interview at Mac World in 1995 where Tim was talking about improvements in customer service, and then on to the HRC site because I was wondering where else the two of you would turn up.)
I just wanted to say congratulations, because I notice that each of you are valuable HRC members. Although their link for "Join HRC" doesn't work, I am quite interested in how I can participate (happily they publish their quarterly magazine on the web for impatient kids like me to read.)
What is Mr. Hormel like? I also notice that David Geffen is on the list. I've always admired Mr. Geffen since a Barbara Walters interview a few years back -- it was the first time I ever watched someone discuss being gay on network television! What an inspiration -- but I cannot find sufficient reason to introduce myself to either of them at the moment (not that I'd know how anyway), even though I think it would be enjoyable to have lunch with them the next time I'm in California.
I feel somewhat like an infant caterpillar in the presence of wise butterflies.
It gives me such joy to know that you two exist. :) Thanks.

I apologize for losing track of your e-mail request. If you haven't already renewed your account to The Cafe, you can do so by visiting the site and accessing any of the protected members-only areas. It will ask for your username and password, and then "see" that your account is expired, and should take you to the renewal pages. A six month renewal is currently $20.
Thank you for taking a moment to write, and again I apologize for the delay in responding to your note.

When you registered, you were able to choose a username and password. These are good for viewing the over 1,500 photos in the regular Cafe gallery. The concept of Cafe Coins are for the exclusive licensed content that can be found in sections like Hadrian's Villa and the FoersterMedia Magazines. You can view thumbnails images in these areas, but to get the larger sized, high-quality photo, you must exchange in a Cafe Coin. The Magazines are set-up to be purchased in 20-25 photos at a time for 20 coins.
If you continue to have problems enjoying your account, please let me know. I also apologize for the delay in responding to your message. Thank you for taking a moment to write,

Happy birthday to Handel. Additionally, you should know that AOL auto-quotes everything you send, so this little excerpt went to John:

11:01 pm - I love you ...
Sweetheart,
I spent another evening at The Grand. This time there were more people there, and I was invited to drink and chat with a group of six other guys. Sitting there with them made me so curious about what I would be doing when I was their age (forties or so).
Anyway, the younger guys at the table, there were two, in their mid twenties, kept touching me and saying things like "Well, with a face like his, do you imagine that he would have sat around here for very long!?"
It didn't do much for my self esteem, to tell you the truth. I know that I'm handsome outside, and I'm every bit so inside. What's happening right now with us isn't fair to either side. I should have been more emotional and caring while you need to be mature about what's happening instead of thinking that you are facing a death sentence. I won't let you leave this earth alone, if that means that I need to move to LA or bring you here ... I was telling Kimber this evening, only moments ago, that I wanted to take care of you ... that I didn't care what it took, I just wanted to be with you. I think she understands now, and has apologized to me (and you) for the way that she's treated our conversations and such ...
I've got my new merchant accounts set-up, and they should be active on Tuesday, the same day that the other ones are being shut off. I've got about seventeen thousand held up as a result of this disaster, and they can keep it for up to nine months, but I think that they'll release it sooner. It's only six weeks of income, but I need over half of it to pay my bills.
I can do this, Shawn ... please don't leave me, really ... please. I love you, Shawn Kimble ... even if it means that I have to keep you in my dreams for eternity.
Nathan
