Broadcast of November 16, 1997

Greetings!

On the November 16 broadcast, Laughing played portions of four compact discs. The first is a reissue on Sony Classics (MK42645) of portions of three LPs that the wonderful organist E. Power Biggs and The Gregg Smith Singers made of the music of Giovanni Gabrieli in the venue for which the music was composed: The Basilica of San Marco in Venice:

Laughing played the fifth and the third of the Concerti Armonici of Unico Willem van Wassenaer, which were long misattributed to Pergolesi (and also to Carlo Ricciotti, who cajoled van Wassenaer, a prominent Netherlandish diplomat, into allowing the anonymous publication of the Concerti in 1740), in the splendid period instrument recording by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Ton Koopman (Erato ECD 75395):

Laughing used van Wassenaer's use of the same theme to which Handel set the words "For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth" in Messiah as a springboard to a plea for your participation in and contribution to the campaign to save Handel's House in London and turn it into a museum.

Laughing thinks very highly of the immensely talented clavierist, Maggie Cole, and played two selections (the Sonatas Nos. 78 and 90) from her 1991 Virgin Classics recording (VC 7 91172-2) of fortepiano and harpsichord pieces by Padre Antonio Soler:

In Laughing's opinion, Maggie Cole is one of the few period instrument, authentic performance practice keyboard players (Skip Sempé is another.), who understands the truth of Duke Ellington's maxim, "It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing."

Finally, Laughing honored the memory of the great violinist, chamber musician, and conductor, Alexander Schneider, whom he had the honor of calling his friend for more than 25 years, by playing three selections (the Mozart Symphony No. 25 in G Minor, KV 183, the Benedetto Marcello Oboe Concerto in D Minor, and The Emperor Waltz by Johann Strauus the Younger) from a wonderful recording on ASV (CD COE 810) of Sasha's 80th birthday concert with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in London's Royal Festival Hall in 1988:
