Broadcast of July 20, 1997
Greetings!
On the July 20 broadcast, Laughing featured:
The "new" Albert Spalding CD that has just been released by A Classical Record (Catalog No.: ACR 42)
;
Skip Sempe's new William Byrd CD on Auvidis/Astree (Catalogue No. E 8611)
;
Sviatoslav Richter playing Bach in recital in Italy in the 1960s on Deutsche Grammophon (Catalogue No.: 447 355-2)
;
and
Rudolf Nureyev conducting Tschaikowsky's Serenade for Strings, recorded at one of the all too few concerts that this immensely gifted man was able to give before he succumbed to AIDS (Magnum Opus CDMO 001)
.
Let us hope that one of the major record companies will license these extraordinary performances and give them a wider circulation!
I am now tentatively scheduled to substitute for Chris on Sunday August 24. If, in fact, I do end up subbing for him, among other things, I intend to play the Fantasia and Fugue in G Minor, BWV 542, twice, first in the "original" version, played by Philippe Lefebvre on the great organ of Notre Dame in Paris
(Catalogue No.: FYCD 124,
which I did not have time for during the July 20th broadcast and,
second, in the 1873 revised version of the piano transcription by
Franz Liszt, recorded by the very gifted and charismatic British pianist
Leslie Howard for Hyperion
(Catalogue No.: CDA66438).
I also plan to play one of the unjustly neglected keyboard sonatas by
Giovanni Benedetto Platti (ca. 1690 - 1763), which are being recorded
in their entirety by Carlo Grante for the Dante label. I find the Sonata
No. 6, with its set of variations particularly intriguing. It is in volume 2
of the series (Catalogue No.
PSG9648).
Finally, I have recently finished reading a collection of letters written
by Giacomo Meyerbeer, the immensely successful contemporary of
Rossini whose operas are now damned with faint praise. I have been
exploring Meyerbeer's orchestral music, and, if there is time, I will
share some of it with you, from an excellent reissue of performances
conducted by René Leibowitz on Forlane
(Catalogue No.: UCD 16586)
Let us hope that we are able to get together via the ether on August 24.
